New BUS Changes for Homeowners
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has changed as of the 28th April 2026.
We’re working to support homeowners with the new BUS grant changes, so we’ve created this information hub for everything you need to know about how the BUS grant works, how payments have changed and how payments are structured.
You can watch this video and read our infographic below to learn more.
The section below explains what we mean when talk about you, the installers and us at Spire Renewables.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant for homeowners in England and Wales to install low-carbon heating, offering £7,500 off air & ground source heat pumps and £5,000 for biomass boilers.
The way you pay for your installation has changed.
The grant is now deducted upfront from your total project cost – so the price you see already has the BUS deducted from the total.
The grant itself is regulated by OFGEM, not by us. We review every application project, to give you the best guidance in being fully compliant for a successful BUS grant application.
Here's how the changes will affect you as a homeowner:
BUS Grant Application
- The BUS grant is installer-led, meaning the installer applies on behalf of the property owner and submits all eligibility information.
- The property owner must then confirm their consent and ensure all information provided is accurate.
- It’s important to note that OFGEM can carry out audits for up to six years after the grant is redeemed.
- If any information is found to be incorrect, the grant could be withdrawn and recovered.
Timeline & Project Delivery
Your grant needs to be approved before we can begin any work or deliver your equipment.
- Your equipment will then be delivered to site, either as one delivery or stages depending on length of installation and preference.
Your heat pump will only be delivered once we can confirm a commissioning date. - We’ll need your help along the way – it may involve scheduling visits, providing access, or signing off paperwork to keep things running smoothly to secure your grant.
- Once your heat pump is delivered, the system would need to be fully commissioned within 2 weeks, with full certification completed within 3 weeks.
Delays & Your Responsibilities
We understand delays are sometimes inevitable, however for avoidable delays such as:
- not being available for necessary site access
- installation works not being ready
- failure to commit to a commissioning date
- changing the scope of the project
We may need to charge for any additional time or costs incurred.
We will always be transparent should this situation arise to discuss mutual solutions.
Important Notices
The grant voucher is deducted upfront, reducing your total project cost.
However, it’s important to understand that if the voucher can’t be redeemed, you would be responsible for the full project cost, plus any agreed variations. If the grant voucher expires, the full project value becomes payable.
We’ll always let you know if this looks likely so we can work together to avoid it.If something puts the grant at risk, we’ll discuss your options with you – including whether you’d like to proceed without the grant contribution.
Project Payment Structure
This is how project payments will be structured.

The BUS Grant is then applied to the total project cost at the beginning of the project:

The payment schedule is then agreed directly between you & your installer.
2 weeks before commissioning, the heat pump is released.
When the installation is successfully commissioned and signed off, the BUS voucher is redeemed.
